EDUCAIDS Christian Alliance on Hiv and Education

Children’s Rights and Participation

Educaids partners regard the UN convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) as a powerful framework to promote and protect children’s rights and to hold actors accountable. The right to information, development, protection, survival and participation are all crucial elements in the delivery of SRHR education. Education programmes are more effective when children and youth participate in designing, planning and implementation. Successful interventions include child and youth panels, child clubs, peer to peer education and counselling. Girls are still having a disadvantaged position, which asks for special attention in SRHR education for both girls and boys.

Ultimately, CSE has to make children and youth aware of their rights and responsibilities, which will guide them to make their own, informed choices on SRHR.
